Spirit Painting

There was a reason why I named my business Palm Spirit Gallery. I often painted in series and at that time I was searching for my biological roots. Every piece had some "spirit" in the painting, or a faceless person. The patterned floor represented on going life and also appeared in my charcoal drawings and my oils. This a remaining piece. The others two psychiatrists!! Always had to wonder if I'd get that call.

This is a 36" x 36" oil. Alot of glazes making it have an ethereal feel to the piece. I have it framed in a heavy wood frame. It's time to let go and move forward. This will be a great piece to chat about.

$1,275.00 or contact me with an offer. Thanks for looking.

Finished Commission Today

Yes I have been a busy little bee! A past collector asked if I would paint her friends dog. He went to the Bridge recently and she thought this would be a nice rememberence for her. I hope this makes her smile.

Contact me for having your pet painted. All sizes.
Thanks, Sheila

Commission Portrait

I've had this here for a while, since January. Something kept it here. My style changed and the background was just so flat. Since my client ordered a "Yellow Labs" book of my art I decided today to work on the background and change how the entire piece looked. I think I like how the background blends in to the dogs rather than just having straight edges. The viewers eyes fill in the ears and body.

A great day! I'm officially out of 4 tubes of paint. So I guess tomorrow is art store day!

I need to take a better photo tommorrow so you can see the color better. As I look at it now I see something that is not done..LOL..amazing what you see when you step back. That white object on the upper right that looks like a telephone pole is actually a tree trunk and I totally missed painting it. Tommorrow the tilte will be correct.
I'll be printing 10 x 8" prints on my new Epson printer tommorrow and the prints will be available for sale. Thanks, Sheila

Oh Where Oh Where....

I have a great little tripod for my Flip video camera. The other day I used it to make my video for my 2010 Project.

I removed it from the camera and placed it carefully on the table. It has now disappeared. My feeling is my trusted assistants, Sophie, Sammy and Fergus have "placed" it somewhere safe and they are not giving up that secret spot. Sigh. I'm feeling a trip to Staples today.

The Project is $260.00 from goal!!! I am amazed at people's belief in my abilities and overwhelmed at the support!! Thank you!! 40 days to go!!

If we have any Psychics out there please give me a hint where my tripod is. It doesn't want to be found..did I twist it's legs too much?

Off to the studio! :-)

So, what do you do on your birthday??? Me? I stop off at a local frame shop to see what they have in standard size frames. What a coup! I was so excited. I rushed home and immediately framed some of my work in them. . What a difference a frame makes.
On occasion I am able to offer framing to the portraits of your pets. Prices will vary according to size.
The flowers in the picture from my daughter and her family. So sweet! A great day of birthday wishes, painting, Ice coffee and a donut at the "Donut" (Dunkin), special molasses cookies from a dear friend, actually from her sweet Lab...and waiting on my gift from Roger. My designer Keds from* My son and family sang happy B-day on the phone and Roger is making me my favorite thing to have since I was a kid on my birthday....grilled cheese and tomato soup.
Let me know if you are interested in any framed pieces.
Warm wishes,

The Story Behind The Painting

I painted this afternoon. But you do that everyday Sheila. I do, and when I'm painting I jump up every few seconds to check email, to look out the window, to do something else I just thought of and while I'm doing that, I may see something that needs to go in the closet and end up trying clothes on. This year after 62 years i was finally diagnosed with ADHD which I have had all my life.
Working on my 2010 painting Project and writing the book, finishing way over due paintings for people and trying to keep up with the Lab Rescues and maybe something new, laundry, Labs etc...a few weeks ago I shut down. to my Dr to see what we could do. He gave me a script for a new drug for adult add and today was the first day I took it. I was nervous if I would change, how would I think? Would I loose me some where in medication??
I just want to say I am SO excited. I'm still me but when I do something now I don't think about email, I stay and do the painting. I think about what I'm doing, I'm having fun and using the abilities I already and confidently know. I said to my husband, "What would I have accomplished if I had been given the meds earlier in my life?" He replied, "Just think what you'll accomplish now!!"

So with that..even though this painting is called "Play Time" I secretly have named it "Victory!"

It's 10 x 8 x 1 on stretched canvas and 40% of the proceeds from the sale will go to Labradors and Friends in San Diego. To purchase go to

The 4:30 PM Update

Worked allot today on this 48 x 36" painting. You can see the sun just starting to streak across the canvas. A good time to stop. The Golden has eyes but no tongue yet. Sammy has his purple halter on meeting the white dog. That's Sophie peeking over behind Sam. near the upper left I'm painting in a Nova Scotia Duck Toller laying down with his toy. (that's for you Rebecca) and in the foreground , bottom left I'll be putting in a cute pup I took a photo of at the vets. Almost finished.
I'll be having Giclees made. professional watercolor Giclees 24" x 18" matted, signed Limited Edition of 150 will be $185.00 If anyone is interested please contact me at
Thanks, Sheila

The Sunday 1:30 PM Update.'s absolutely Gorgeous out in Florida today. The sun is bright and it's about maybe 75 degrees. I SO needed this. So I brought the large painting out back where i am working and having SO much fun. Putting in grass, trees, another dog.. I'll keep working on it. See what we have at the 5 o'clock update!!

Still Going Strong

Oh I'm having fun. The purples and blues are scattered all about with bright yellow greens. SO fun. When it's finished my plan is to have it professionally photographed so I can make Giclees . Just for the running Golden if for nothing else! Just love how that dog is coming out.
I "see" the final piece so I'm excited to keep painting.

Did Get A Little More Done

Not as much as I had wanted to get done today. This cold weather in Florida is really getting to me. You would think that being from Boston and NH I'd be used to it, but no. Today I worked on the two playing Labs in back and then worked on the running Golden and the grass beneath. Right after, started to bring in the dalmation. He is standing near palms so he will be mostl;y in shade with bright highlights. It is so fun to bring these dogs to life. Hope you like the progress.

48" x 24" Dog Park Painting The Start

Sophie, Sammy and Fergus Vet, Dr. Thomson was able to get permission for me to hang some work at the Clinic. I wanted it to be fun and encompass more than just Labs. This is painted from many photos I have taken at our dog park so ofcourse the background will be great palms and leaves. I will be posting updates during the week to finish so be sure and come back. This is one I want to even work all night on. :-)

Continuation of Painting...Small Video

I may post another later today. I have 4 paintings lined up for commissions so I need to work on those also today. Just wanted to keep you up to date on the process. The front Black Lab is taking over center stage so to speak. He is the foreground. I'll be working more on his face. The right side as you look straight on is in shadow so I really want to accent the left. My plan is to make his flopping ears "active", giving them the motion he is experiencing. We'll see.

And Now For Something Completely Different!

Last night I thought it would be fun to go back to a technique I haven't attempted in years. I did a 1993 calendar in this method and I have always loved it.
It's called Stippling. Individual ink dots making up an entire piece. Allot of work, allot of time but I go to another world and dot away.
Pointillism, somewhat similar, uses dots of color rather than black ink. I'm not sure if I have the focus for color but I'm not saying I won't try it sometime in the future.

This piece is 7" x 7" image size with a 2" acid free mat all around. If this is what you would love unframed but matted it would be $350.00
Framed in a black wood PLein Aire frame 3" all around the price would be $400.00. All shipping is on me.
Hope you like this technique, I may be doing more as the year progresses. Thanks, Sheila
